  Energy-saving bulbs are popular these days as more of us are becoming mindful of preserving energy and making 'green' decisions. Fluorescent bulbs offer many benefits to the earth and your pocket via the price of the electricity bill. Read on to find out more.

Compact Fluorescent Buying Guide

- CFLs (compact fluorescent bulbs) use up to about 80% less energy than incandescent light bulbs. Though the brilliance of the light is the same, fluorescent bulbs only need about one-fifth of the wattage of energy needed.

- In addition to less energy used, compact fluorescent bulbs can last up to ten times longer than other bulbs. Their associated ballasts produce a longer life span than the filaments available with incandescent bulbs.

- One of the biggest benefits is that CFLs save you money. Due to their longer life and less energy needed, your electric bill will be drastically reduced. It has been estimated that one fluorescent bulb can save its owner anywhere from $30 to $50 dollars in its lifetime. That is incredible savings due to one light bulb!

- Many people enjoy natural lighting over artificial lighting. Newer models of fluorescent bulbs emulate natural lighting. Full-spectrum compact fluorescent bulbs produce light that is very similar to that of the sun.

- Incandescent bulbs produce a lot of heat. CFL bulbs produce virtually no heat at all while radiating light of equal brilliance, making CFLs safer to handle.

- Compact fluorescent bulbs have a place in many areas of your home. Place CFLs in your kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, living room, and recreation rooms. Wherever you spend the most amount of time and use the most lighting, implement a CFL bulb to ensure efficiency and savings.

- In addition, floodlight bulbs for the outside of your house can be fluorescent bulbs too. Floodlight bulbs emit a lot of light and can place a drain on your electricity bill if incandescent bulbs are used.

- CFLs can be used with a timer (but check to see if the specific bulbs are compatible with the timer) or with photocells. In addition, fluorescent bulbs can be used with dimmers, but it is suggested to only use bulbs that are made for dimmers.
